Why I’m building Wanderwing

As a mom of 2 girls, I’ve watched my daughters and their friends grow up on screens. I’ve watched some kids have tantrums when they have to put down a screen and others simply put it down and walk away. I’ve watched my daughters use screens as a tool to learn about their world, and I’ve watched them bed rot on a Saturday scrolling for longer than I would like.

Watching all of this is what inspired me to build Wanderwing.

Here’s a hard truth: Screens are here. Most kids in generation alpha, born after 2012, have a tablet by the age of 2 and half have a phone by the age of 8 (source: Annie E. Casey Foundation).

Screen-free is a thing of the past. Screen-balance is the skill kids need to succeed.

I created Wanderwing to make curiosity an adventure. We gamify curiosity and autonomy. Kids choose a wander, get off screens, and make IRL connections.

Join me as we raise a generation of kids who can use screens… without being owned by them.

Emily Carter

My name is Emily Carter, and I’m on a mission to raise tech savvy kids. As a mother of two girls and vice president at a major non-profit, I have spent more time than I want to admit wondering if my kids are getting enough free play time.

Outside of work, I love leading my daughter's Girl Scout troop, coaching Girls on the Run, mentoring fundraising professionals, and wandering with my family. My husband, Sam, is an award winning artist, the man who can always 'fix it,' and the shop foreman at the Center for Puppetry Arts.
